3 Habits to Break for a Healthier Lifestyle

18 January 2017

I don't know about you, but I know for me, as much as I love all these ideas that come around in January about "living a healthy lifestyle" and "being more minimalistic" and "being the best version of me I can be" (how fun, right), that it's actually a really hard thing to do.  It's not easy, and it's definitely not an overnight thing.  It's not one of those things where you can snap your fingers and magically become PERFECT.  (sadly though! =P) And I've noticed that in my life, there are still bad habits that I don't always realize as "bad habits", and they aren't good for me at all.
It is easier to prevent bad habits than to break them.  -Benjamin Franklin
Habits don't develop overnight, so they can't be gotten rid of overnight either.  So today, I decided to post some habits that I want need to break this year.  THIS IS HAPPENING, guys.

1.  GET OFF YOUR PHONE BEFORE BED
By at least half an hour. There have been more than a few nights where I got to bed early and ON TIME, and then I decide I'm just going to "quick check up on what's happening".  And then -- OH NO! How did an half-an-hour already fly by?

*GASP*

OH RIGHT BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO "QUICKLY" CHECK MY PHONE RIGHT YES OH YES HOW COULD I FORGET.  Obviously this is one that I definitely need to work on a lot. It can be so tempting for me to just check up on one thing -- that usually ends up being more like ten things.  Also, being glued to a screen right before going to bed can even affect your mind and sleep, and having a good, restful sleep is honestly so, so important.

2.  CLEAN INSPIRES CREATIVITY.
Guys, this is one I need to practice A LOT MORE. I don't think I realized for a long time how important this is -- but having a clean environment inspires creativity.  Think about it.  I know for me, when my room is a wreck and in absolute chaos (and it's definitely not a beautiful mess), I don't feel as...inspired.  For anything.  So what I've been trying to do lately is before I get started with my day or before I start doing anything, make sure the space is clean and tidy.  Even if it's not spotless, at least clean. And actually? This works like a charm.

3.  RATHER THAN STAYING UP LATE AND GETTING UP LATE, MAINTAIN A REGULAR SLEEP SCHEDULE.

HAHAHAHA I definitely don't need to work on this DEFINITELY NOT HAHAHA. Not at all.
Even though this one is pretty obvious, (I think) it's probably one of the hardest habits to start/break. On my list of goals for this month, one of the goals I had was "taking care of myself", which included going to bed earlier.  Let's just say that it's a lot easier said than done =) Even though my mind knows that I need to stop what I'm doing so I can unwind, I just....don't.  Which when written out it seems trivial, but this one is crazy hard.  And I PERSONALLY know how tough this one can be.  BUT STILL WE SHALL CONQUER THIS, GUYS.

SO LET'S TALK!! What do you think about these (bad :P) habits? PFFT I'M SURE YOU DON'T HAVE THEM THOUGH BECAUSE YOU ARE FLAWLESS.  Ohhh and a HUGE thank you to all of you guys who participated in the poll in my last post, it was honestly really helpful and SO CLOSE! The two days that were almost tied were Wednesday and Saturday, but since a lot bloggers post on Saturdays, I decided to try Wednesdays for now and we'll see how it goes! I'm super excited about this, and I hope you are too! What are some habits you want to start/break this upcoming year? Is it easy for you to stay on track with the things you need to do? (IF SO UM PLEASE LIKE TEACH ME YOUR SECRETS.)

  1. k hey i'm here to say that YOU'RE RIGHT I AM FLAWLESS I DON'T HAVE ANY OF THESE HABITS AT ALL *flips hair*
kiddddiiingg. yikes. you got me on like every one of them. 1. the phone isn't too big of a problem. it's sort of like...i set the phone down, and all the sudden i have a book in my hands and it's 11:30pm and i told myself i'd go to bed at 10pm and i'm just getting to the good part HOW CAN I SLEEP NOOOOWW. XD
    2. *snaps* this is gold. and a habit i actually have already set in stone for myself. except it's more of a weekly thing- i choose one day to vacuum my room, put my clothes away, wash my blankets, and whatever else needs done.
    3. hahahahahahaaaa woooooooooppsss.... so i have to get up a little before 7 because i have prayer from 7-8 and i'm like, "well I need my 8 hours of sleep" so i'm like 10:30 PM BEDTIME AT THE LATEST and then i stay up too late and wake up early and i'm exhausted so hahahah yeah...i need to fix that.
also for staying on track: I MAKE TO DO LISTS. *gasps* i knowwww. but i get stressed out by all the stuff i need to do and it really calms me to just sit down for a couple of minutes and make a list of everything i need to get done. and then i go and do things and check them oFF SO THAT'S EXCITING. but don't stick to the list. do other things that's not on it. if you never complete an item, that's okay. time to throw that list away and make A NEW ONE.
    *laughs*
loved this post, autumn. can't wait to see what's coming up. x

    1. WELL YES YOU ARE FLAWLESS SO. :P
righttt? It's crazy because I wrote this post and all, yet I still do these SAME THINGS. Like every day. IT'S SO BAD UGH.
OMG YESSS A good book is literally the hardest thing to put down. I'd almost say it's worse than a phone. THEY ARE SO CAPTIVATING. And before you know it it's like super late and I'm LIKE ARGGHH xD
EEEEP YOU'RE SO GOOD. That is actually so smart, dude. I should try doing that! I usually try to clean the rest of the house so I forget about my room *facepalm*
RIGHT?? I always have devotions in the morning and I hate it when I'm just like sleeping the whole time. WHOOPS. I usually get up at 6:00...so I'm trying to make myself go to bed before 9:00 at LEAST. XD

THAT IS GENIUS. So true...I usually make daily lists for me. Like the night before I'll just write out what I want to accomplish the next day and it actually works (SOMETIMES) :) IT IS EXCITING THOUGH ISN'T IT. You're the best person ever, Cally <3

YOU ARE AMAZING, GIRL. (smiling so hard right now :)

  2. LOL Autumn love the energy you have in this post really trying to convince us and yourself to change these habits!! I really do need to work on taking time off my phone before bed. Confession: I use to fall asleep with my phone in my hand. Ahaha how awful is that? Have yourself a wonderful week!!

  3. I actually didn't have a phone for a year and got a WAY better sleeping schedule because of it. However, now that I have one again, I've fallen into the YouTube trap (I'll watch one video....okay maybe another....wut how did I get onto cats playing the drums???)

    1. WOW that is really smart, dude. I know people who don't have a phone and I think it's almost helpful in some ways. I think getting off the phone before bed really does help with sleeping though. SAME SAME SAME Wow like literally SAME. YouTube is probably one of the best/worst things ever invented haha It takes my mind off the things I should be doing sometimes (LIKE SLEEPING)

  6. YESSSSS!!!!! Bad habits are so hard to break and I've found myself developing a lot of bad ones lately :P On my list is not checking pinterest and twitter and facebook every three seconds while trying to get some writing done (in fact, I don't know how I even get writing done while doing that. lol) I've found that I have to constantly check myself over and over again and RESIST.

Those are some great things to get better at and I wish you all the best with breaking them! Great post! :D

    1. RIGHTTTT. It's so easy to develop bad habits, and so easy to forget that they're "bad" too XD *high five* SAME SAME. That is like the exact same problem with me, not going to lie. I don't have facebook and I quit Pinterest, but Twitter is so distracting. Like it's kind of ridiculous WHY WOULD I CHECK IT I JUST CHECKED IT .0000000001 SECONDS AGO.

Thank you so much for reading, Audrey <3 WE CAN DO THIS.

  9. Ohhh man yes, that third one is sooo hard. I've gotten into this terrible habit of going to bed super late every. single. night. Even on nights where I'm not doing school, just because I can't get myself to get in bed earlier. #relatable Haha. :)

    1. IT IS ISN'T IT? Ughhh. I know that it is incredibly hard to go to bed early...especially when there's things I need to do and then I get distracted UGHH. SO RELATABLE, DUDE. I guess practice makes perfect!

  11. UGH REGULAR SLEEP SCHEDULES. I'm actually on a fairly decent schedule where I'm sleeping consistently and getting 7-8 hours, but it took me a few months to break the habit of late nights and bad sleep and such because internet and Netflix and #rebellion. :P That was so, so tough for me, and led me to feel like I was wasting time by not staying up later...but I'm so much more energetic and motivated now, so it's worth it. Would definitely recommend.

      haha right XD

    1) I obviously don't fall asleep with my phone just barely turned off. At least I don't have social media on my phone....

  14. Cleanliness does inspire creativity, yes! It's weird because honestly I feel a billion times Loren productive after cleaning my room, and also my focus is solely on my project now that my room is clean. Getting off of my phone before bed is hard, but I fall asleep faster without it. ^.^

    1. EEEP YES RIGHT?? It's kind of weird, because it can feel counter-productive cleaning instead of DOING THINGS, but it helps so much, it's crazy. OOOH YES DEFINITELY. I really need to start making myself put the phone away...even if it's hard!

  15. Oh my goodness, BUT IT"S SO HARD TO GET OFF MY DEVICE OR STOP READING TO FALL ASLEEP. xD I'm kinda a clean freak, but I really have a hard time falling asleep.

  16. I follow that first one religiously, ever since I found out how too much screen time can ruin sleep. Why do we even do this? I thought we loved sleeping. :') All good advice. I rememebr my dad used to tell me about how he would sleep 5 hours every night when he was my age. It's awful that bad sleeping habits are encouraged in Korea (where I was born). Oh, and keeping your room organised YES. Don't they say that focus goes down in a messy bedroom, or something?

    1. I know it's honestly so crazy. When I was searching for an article that talked about it, I was really shocked to find some of the stuff out. It's so bad -- yet no one really realizes it. People always say how much they love sleep. BUT THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND TECHNOLOGY RUINS IT. Wow, that is awful. It's pretty crazy. OOOH yes I think I've heard that before? I definitely would agree with it.

These are such good points! I'm trying to have proper sleeping hours as well, but the problem is I pick up my phone "just to see" like you said, and then it's super late :/ One of the cons of modern technology!
